The majority of the city's top attractions and most famous landmarks are found in the National Mall. There you can find the White House, the US Capitol Building, the Lincoln Memorial and Reflecting Pool, the Washington Memorial, the Franklin Roosevelt Memorial, the Jefferson Memorial, the Vietnam War Memorial, the Korean War Veterans Memorial, World War II Memorial, D.C. War Memorial (memorial to World War I), Ulysses S. Grant Memorial and many other prominent landmarks. Please keep in mind that tours of some federal buildings such as the White House and the Capitol Buildings require a reservation in advance and that you will have to pass security procedure. The great thing about it is that they are free.

The Anacostia Museum dedicated to history and culture of the African Americans is found in the Anacostia neighborhood part of which has been listed to the National Register of Historic Places as Anacostia Historic District. The National Gallery of Art located in the National Mall is not a part of the Smithsonian museums but it is open to visitors free of charge as well.

The National Portrait Gallery and the Smithsonian American Art Museum share a National Historic Landmark building in the Penn Quarter neighborhood which is not far from the National Mall.
