Tucson is one of the oldest continuously inhabited areas in North America and you will be able to notice the city's rich heritage and history on every step. The days of the Wild West may be long gone but two train depots in downtown Tucson and the Armory Park Historic Residential District just south of downtown will take back to the time of Wyatt Earp who made a stop in Tucson before the famous Gunfight at the O.K. Corral, while the St. Augustine Cathedral, Pima Country Courthouse, Hotel Congress, Fox Theater and some other prominent landmarks in Tucson downtown remained virtually unchanged since the days of John Dillinger, one of the most famous early 20th century outlaws.

Visitors interested in history will also like the Arizona State Museum which amongst other also houses the world's largest collection of Southwest American Indian pottery and the Arizona Historical Society where you can see the Geronimo's rifle and 18th century Spanish silver artifacts. Worth visiting is also Pima Air and Space Museum which is one of the largest of its kind in the world.

Nature lovers can learn more about the local wildlife and the desert in the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum which encompasses live animal exhibits in splendid natural surroundings, a botanical garden and natural history museum. The best way to experience the Sonoran Desert natural beauty and discover the saguaro cactus is to take a leisure drive to the Saguaro National Park or explore the natural wonders along the hiking trails. If you decide for the latter option please keep in mind that the summers can be extremely hot. Always wear a hat and make sure you drink plenty of water.

Tucson is truly a paradise for outdoor adventurers but it is also known as the Astronomy capital of the world and has some of the clearest skies in the country. Make sure you bring your telescope with you or gaze the stars at the Kitt Peak National Observatory which is about 55 miles (88 kilometers) southwest of Tucson.
