Sacramento, California

Sacramento is the capital of the state of California located at the confluence of the Sacramento River and the American River. The city that was founded in 1849 still reveals its role during the gold rush and visitors interested in history can admire numerous buildings and sites that date back to the 19th century. Sacramento is also home to numerous museums and art galleries which offer something for everyone.

It is always good time to visit Sacramento because the city has a Mediterranean climate characterized by dry, hot summers and mild winters but you are highly recommended to plan your trip to Sacramento on Labor Day Weekend when take place the Gold Rush Days. This annual event will take you back to the time of the Wild West and the Gold Rush. Over 200 tons of dirt are dumped on the streets to create the look the city has had in mid-19th century, while costumed re-enactors, gun fights and variety of other performances truly make you feel like you were in the time of the gold rush in the mid 1800's. Sacramento Gold Rush Days are truly worth visiting and will entertain the entire family. If you are planning to visit the California's capital another time of the year you may be able to catch the Sacramento Jazz Jubilee, a jazz festival held every May during Memorial Day or live concerts at the Cesar Chavez Park every Friday from May to August.

Sacramento is a great place to spend your vacations if being interested in history. Old Sacramento is a must-see even if not visiting the city during the Gold Rush Days. Officially called Old Sacramento State Historic Park is home to a large number of historic buildings most of which date from the 19th century and enable you to see how the city looked like when it was founded. You will be delighted by the Big Four House, the Pony Express Terminal and many other historic sites most of which have been added on the National Register of Historic Places as well as declared National Historic Landmarks. Old Sacramento is also home to the California State Railroad Museum, the Sacramento History Museum and some other museums worth visiting. There you can also take a cruise on a historic riverboat such as Delta King which has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places as well.

If being interested in history you will also like the California State Capitol Museum and its historic offices and legislative chambers as well as the Sutter's Fort State Historic Park where you can find the famous Sutter's Fort and the California State Indian Museum. Worth visiting is also the Governor's Mansion State Historic Park, the former home of the Governor of California.

Sacramento is an absolute paradise for history buffs but the city will also delight visitors interested in arts. It is home to the Crocker Art Museum, one of the nation's finest art museums and the oldest of its kind in the Western United States. Every second Saturday in month takes place the Second Saturday Art Walk when Sacramento art galleries remain open until the late evening hours.
