Richmond, VA

Richmond is the capital city of the Commonwealth of Virginia and a fascinating place which is famous for a wealth of historical buildings and sites which will not delight history buffs alone. It is one of the oldest cities in the United States but much of the colonial architecture has been destroyed in a fire set by the Confederates when the forces of the Union invaded Richmond. However, many prominent buildings of the former capital of the Confederacy were spared and are admired by numerous visitors from all over the world. Today, Richmond is an important business center but still retains its distinctive southern charm.

Richmond is considered one of the most historic cities in the United States and its visitors will be amazed by the wealth of exciting historic attractions found within as well as nearby the city. The Virginia State Capitol, the National Historic Landmark that has been also listed on the National Register of Historic Places is definitely the city's most recognizable and visited landmark. It was designed by Thomas Jefferson, the 3rd President of the United States in 1785 and still serves as the seat of state government in the Commonwealth of Virginia and the Virginia General Assembly. The building that was inspired by the ancient Roman temple at Nimes in southern France also served as Capitol of the Confederacy during the American Civil War. Nearby you can find the Virginia Governor's Mansion, also known as Executive Mansion and another National Historic Landmark which is still the official residence of the Governor of the Commonwealth of Virginia. At close walking distance is also the White House of the Confederacy which today houses the Museum of the Confederacy with an impressive collection of artifacts, documents and photographs of the Confederacy including the sword and firearms of General Robert E. Lee.

Another must-see is the St. John's Episcopal Church listed on the National Register of Historic Places and declared the National Historic Landmark. It is the oldest church in Richmond but it is better known as the site of the Virginia Convention of 1775 at which Patrick Henry had his famous “give me liberty or give me death” speech. Nearby is the Hollywood Cemetery, the resting place of two US Presidents – James Monroe and John Tyler as well as the Jefferson Davis, the President of the Confederate States of America and 25 Confederate generals including J. E. B. Stuart and George Pickett. The cemetery also houses a 90 feet tall pyramid, a memorial to over 18,000 enlisted men of the Confederate forces.

If being interested in history you will also like the Tredegar Iron Works, a historic iron foundry and the site of the visitor center for NPS Richmond National Battlefield Park and a private museum The American Civil War Center at Historic Tredegar. The Richmond National Battlefield Park encompasses over 30 American Civil War sites around the city including several important battlefields as well as the Chimborazo Hospital. Nearby Tredegar is a pedestrian bridge to the Belle Isle that served as a military prison during Civil War. Today it a park which enables you to observe wildlife as well as enjoy the view of the Richmond's skyline.
