Reno, Nevada

Reno, also known as "The Biggest Little City in the World" is the second largest gaming destination in Nevada after Las Vegas and is famous for its numerous hotel-casino resorts as well as the birthplace of Harrah's Entertainment. However, Reno is an exciting place which offers much more than just gambling. It is home to numerous attractions, while plenty of must-sees are also found nearby the city. Reno truly offers something for everyone all year round and will not let you down whether you are planning fun vacations with your friends, a romantic weekend for two or family holidays.

Reno is world-famous for its casino resorts and a trip to the city would be incomplete if not visiting at least one. You can try your luck in one of many casino resorts such as Harrah's Reno, Atlantis, Peppermill, Gran Sierra Resort, Silver Legacy and many others. Major casino resorts also offer numerous dinning and entertainment opportunities as well as children's attractions. When you are done with gambling you can enjoy a variety of outdoor activities the city has to offer. At short walking distance from the casinos you can find the Wingfield Park featuring a kayak park which is open all year round. Reno surroundings also offers great mountain biking, especially the Peavine Mountain about 5 miles northwest from Reno.

If mountain biking is not your thing you can hike or bicycle on the Tahoe-Pyramid Bikeway along the Truckee River. Reno is also close to Lake Tahoe and Lake Pyramid where you can swim, fish or enjoy water sports like water-ski, jet-ski and parasail. If winter sports is what you are after Reno will not let you down either. As much as 18 ski resorts are only 11 miles from the city or less including Sugar Bowl, Northstar-at-Tahoe, Alpine Meadows, Mount Rose Ski Tahoe, Diamond Peak, Sierra-at-Tahoe, Heavenly Mountain Resort and Squaw Valley Ski Resort.

Visitors interested in historic landmarks should rent a car and drive to the Virginia City and visit the Virginia City Historic District listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The district encompasses the former mining villages and several buildings that remained unchanged since their construction in the mid-19th century. It is one of only six National Historic Landmarks in Nevada.

If being interested in automobile history you do not have to leave Reno at all. The city is home to the National Automobile Museum where you can see an impressive collection of vehicles from the late 19th throughout the 20th century. The highlights are John Wayne's 1953 Chevrolet Corvette, Elvis Presley's 1973 Cadillac Eldorado and Frank Sinatra's 1961 Ghia L6.4. Reno's National Automobile Museum is regarded one of the best of its kind in the world.

Worth visiting are also the Nevada Art Museum, especially if you like fine arts and the Wilbur D. May Center encompassing Wilbur D. May Museum and Wilbur D. May Arboretum and Botanical Garden. The Nevada Museum of Art is found south downtown, while the Wilbur D. May Center is located within the Rancho San Rafael Regional Park.
