Philadelphia, nicknamed the Philly and the City of Brotherly Love is a charming city located just about 45 miles southwest of the New York City. The city is best known for its role in the American Revolution and Independence and is also referred as the Birthplace of America. It was Philadelphia where the United States Declaration of Independence was signed. The city also served as the capital of the Unites States from 1790 to 1800 when the capital was transferred to the newly built Washington D. C.

Philadelphia is a vibrant metropolis which is home to numerous world-class attractions but it is definitely best known for its historical sites and buildings many of which played an important role in the American history. Philadelphia is known as one of the most walkable cities in the United States which means that you can easily explore its rich historical heritage by foot. The greatest historical treasure in the city is definitely the Independence National Historical Park which is home to some of the most important nation's landmarks and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places as well as designated the National Historic Landmark District. The 45 acre park is located in the Center City and is home to the famous Independence Hall, the Liberty Bell and some other important historic buildings.

The Independence Hall is the highlight of the Independence National Historical Park. The beautiful building dating from the first half of the 18th century was the site where both the Declaration of Independence and the United States Constitution were adopted as well as the meeting place of the Second Continental Congress and later of the Constitution Convention. The bell tower of the Independence Hall was home to the Liberty Bell which is today in a glass pavilion on the Independence Mall. In addition to the Independence Hall and the Liberty Bell, the park is also home to the Old City Hall, the First and the Second Bank of the United States, Congress Hall, City Tavern, Bishop White House, Christ Church and some other splendid historic buildings which are worth visiting as well.

Not far from the Independence National Historical Park is the Benjamin Franklin Parkway, one mile long boulevard starting at Philadelphia City Hall and ending at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Along the Parkway are some of the city's most famous landmarks and attractions such as the Franklin Institute housing the Benjamin Franklin National Memorial, Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul, Swann Memorial Fountain, the Rodin Museum, Washington Monument and the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Nearby you can also find the Edgar Allan Poe National Historic Site, the former home of the famous American author.

Philadelphia top attractions may be closely tied to history but the city is a vibrant cosmopolitan city which offers something for everyone. Once you are done with the historical landmarks and cultural attractions you can enjoy in one of many city's fine restaurants and do some shopping in the Old City where you can also find more historic landmarks such as the Elfreth's Alley.
