The city of Baltimore, situated at the juncture of the Chesapeake Bay about 40 miles from Washington D.C. and 100 miles from Philadelphia is a beautiful city offering exciting urban vacations. A wealth of different attractions most of which are found in the Inner Harbor in the heart of the city truly offers something for everyone making Baltimore one of the most popular city break destinations in the United States.

Baltimore is probably best known as the site of the Battle of Baltimore during the War of 1812 that inspired the Francis Scott Key's lyrics the Star Spangled-Banner which later become the national anthem of the United States. Today, Baltimore is one of the largest US cities and a major cultural center, while Inner Harbor that used to be a major seaport is the most recognizable and visited city's landmarks. Here you can find some of the best museums in the city including the National Aquarium in Baltimore widely considered as one of the best in the country. The world-famous aquarium houses over 16,000 specimens of more than 650 species, while the main attractions include a multiple-story shark tank, dolphin display, rooftop tropical forest and central ray pool offering fun to the entire family.

The Inner Harbor is also home to the Historic Ships including the US Sloop-of-War Constellation, the US Submarine Torsk and the US Coast Guard Cutter Taney which are located within a short walking distance of each other. In addition to the National Aquarium in Baltimore and the three historic museum ships, the Inner Harbor also houses the Seven Foot Knoll Lighthouse and Pratt Street Power Plant, and several museums worth visiting such as Port Discovery Children's Museum, Geppi's Entertainment Museum, Jewish Museum of Maryland with two historic synagogues, Maryland Science Center and the American Visionary Art Museum. Just a short walk from the Inner Harbor are the Babe Ruth Birthplace Museum and Sports Legends at Camden Yards which are an absolute must-see for baseball fans.

Across the Inner Harbor is Fort McHenry National Monument and Historic Shrine, the site of the famous Battle of Baltimore in which the American defenders repulsed the British warships. History buffs will also enjoy the Fells Point Historic District which remained virtually unchanged since the 18th and 19th century, the Peale Museum, the National Blacks in Wax Museum, the Baltimore Basilica, the Westminster Hall and Burying Ground, and the Washington Monument which was the first planned monument to honor the 1st US President George Washington. A must-see is also the Baltimore Poe House and Museum, the house where the famous writer and poet spent the last years of his life as well as the Flag House and Star-Spangle Banner Museum, the former home of Mary Pickersgill who sewed the Star Spangled Banner that flew over Fort McHenry during the Battle of Baltimore in 1814 and inspired the national anthem. The museum designated as National Historic Landmark contains furniture and artifacts from the early 19th century, and several personal personal items of the Pickergill family.
