Anchorage, Alaska

Anchorage is the largest city of the Northern state of Alaska, with a population of just under 300,000. Unlike most of the cities in southern Alaska, Anchorage was neither a fishing town, nor a mining camp. Its main growth came from the Alaskan Railroad's choice of this site as their railroad headquarters in Alaska. Today you can still visit the lovely Art Deco building that is the Alaska Railroad Depot and catch a train to near-by Seward or Denali National Park. It's a relaxing way to travel, and the views are unforgettable.

If you'd rather walk than take a train, you're also in luck. There are many beautiful hiking trails in the area around Anchorage, including the 11-mile long Tony Knowles Coastal Trail that starts in downtown. This trail is paved for cyclists, and also welcomes joggers and walkers. When you reach the end of the trail, you'll find yourself in the famous Kincaid Park. This park is open from 10 am to 10 pm seven days a week for hikers and mountain bikers. In the winter, be sure to bring or rent a set of cross-country skis! For the more experienced outdoor explorer, Flattop Mountain sits to the east of Anchorage in Chugach State Park. This is the most climbed mountain in Alaska, possibly because of the breathtaking panoramic views it offers year round.

The Alaskan tundra and mountains are home to many animals unique to far northern climates, and urban Anchorage and the surrounding areas are no exception! There are wolves, bears, mountain goats, otters, and many other animals that call this region home. If you missed seeing any caribou, foxes, or moose on your hikes, be sure to drop in on the Alaska Zoo before you leave. Here every animal has a name, and many are rescued and rehabilitated. A great place to visit with kids!

Finally, if you're looking for a relaxing, indoor experience to round out your trip, Anchorage is home to many fine quality museums and history centers such as the Alaska Native Heritage Center, the Anchorage Museum of History and Art, the Alaska Museum of Natural History, and many beautiful art galleries.

There are lots of things to see and do in the Municipality of Alaska. Breathtaking scenery, outdoor activities, animals, and history all come together in this picture-perfect city in South Central Alaska.

We will continue to update this site to add the best, top rated and most popular Restaurants, Spas, Steakhouses, Attractions, Shopping, Nightlife, Bars and more in Anchorage Alaska.
